King's Field is a first-person RPG developed by FromSoftware that drops you into the crumbling tomb of the kingdom of Verdite. You play as Jean, a lone wanderer armed with a sword and magic, navigating maze-like dungeons filled with traps, monsters, and environmental puzzles. Combat requires timing and resource management, balancing melee strikes with spellcasting to survive tougher foes. The game’s slow-burn exploration rewards attention to detail, with hidden passages and lore fragments encouraging players to map every corner of its dimly lit world. The game’s haunting atmosphere and methodical design have made it a retro cult hit, praised for its early 3D innovation and challenging gameplay. With a 8.2/10 average on retro gaming sites, fans highlight its moody visuals and the thrill of overcoming tough boss fights through trial and error. Its influence on later FromSoftware titles is clear, but King's Field stands on its own as a tense, methodical adventure that prioritizes player ingenuity over hand-holding.

In ancient days, when a great battle was fought and many were dying, Verdite was saved by a person who then disappeared into the forest. Only the forest's drifting fog knew who this person was... The citizens called their savior the Forest Dragon and built a sanctuary and honored this person there. Eventually, only a legend remained and the Sanctuary was changed into the Royal Graveyard and all was silent. But, the legend says, "Someday the Dragon of the Forest shall return, bearing Magical Artifacts." However, the time has not yet come and the Sanctuary sleeps deeply...
