King's Field is a first-person RPG that lets you explore a dark fantasy island as Prince Aleph. You roam open areas, climb ruins, and fight enemies in real time, all rendered in 3D polygons for 1995. The goal is to reclaim the Moonlight Sword from a cult, navigating dungeons and solving environmental puzzles. Combat mixes melee strikes and spells, with a focus on positioning and resource management. The world feels alive with hidden paths and optional challenges, though dialogue is sparse and storytelling leans on environment over exposition. This title earned a cult following for pushing PlayStation hardware limits with its 360° camera and non-linear design. Critics at launch praised its ambition, and modern retrospectives often highlight its influence on later FromSoftware titles. While early 3D exploration can feel clunky by today’s standards, the game’s atmosphere and scale remain impressive for its era. It’s a forgotten precursor to the studio’s later hits, with a Metacritic score of 78 that reflects its enduring niche appeal.
The game takes place on the island of Melanat. The player takes the role of Granitiki prince Aleph (alternatively named Alef/Alexander), who has taken it upon himself, as one of the king of Verdite's closest friends, to retrieve the holy sword known as the Moonlight Sword, and return it to King Alfred of the kingdom of Verdite. Aleph is washed up on the coast of Melanat, as the sole survivor after the ship he came with sank into the ocean. To find the Moonlight Sword, Aleph must press ever forward and uncover the secrets the dark island of Melanat holds.
