About

King's Field The Ancient City is a first-person RPG that emphasizes exploration and methodical combat. You play as a warrior navigating crumbling ruins and dense forests in a decaying kingdom. Battles require precise timing and resource management since healing items are scarce. The story unfolds through environmental clues and sparse dialogue about a cursed idol draining life from the land. Progression hinges on leveling stats and upgrading gear found in hidden chests. This title stands as the final entry in the series for home consoles before FromSoftware shifted focus. Its punishing difficulty and atmospheric world design drew praise from fans for setting early foundations of the studio's signature style. While less known than later works, it holds a cult following among players who appreciate its bleak tone and rewarding challenge. The game’s influence can be seen in later titles that mix dark fantasy with punishing gameplay.

Storyline

In the land of Heladin, something is amiss. Their king, smitten by a strange idol that was given to him as a gift, lies dying. The country was enveloped with a strange sorrow, a certain darkness that stains the soul of man. Ever since the idol was brought into the kingdom, the once prosperous nation fell into a state of corruption and decay. Fearing for the life of his king and home, the sword master Septiego took a battalion of his best men to return the idol which was believed to be the source of this tragedy. Alas, the party was neither seen nor heard from again. The idol was presumed lost forever, but the decay of the nation continued.
