About

Kobayashi Maru: Final is a fast-paced arcade shooter built for the Atari Jaguar CD that throws you into a chaotic dogfight between rival galactic factions. You control a prototype warpship with no stabilizers or reverse thrusters forcing you to weave through dense drone swarms at full speed while dodging collisions and blasting enemies. Each level ends with a mothership showdown before you warp to the next battlefield. Rescue falling XUNT hostages by collecting them midair though destroying their parachutes makes them plummet faster. Chain rescues boost your score but losing a ship resets the streak. Earn new warpships by racking up kills though the Ebil Alliance will eventually overwhelm your fleet if you can’t keep replacements coming. The game runs at 50 or 60 fps depending on the level and uses a modified RAPTOR API for its visuals. Players can use specialized rotary controllers or a standard Jaguar pad though the former likely enhances the frantic movement mechanics. As a 2012 homebrew title it stands as a niche tribute to Konami’s Time Pilot with its relentless action and escalating difficulty. The Tetrad’s desperate defense of four planets unfolds through text between waves but the real focus is the punishing pace of combat. Only 11 people own it on MobyGames but diehard Atari fans might appreciate the technical ambition of packing this much chaos onto a 16-bit system.

Storyline

Xu approached the balcony of his presidential suite in his usual calm and purposeful manner. This time was different, however. As he looked out to the stars for what was sure to be the last time, he knew he had only one card left to play and that it offered no realistic hope of success. The Ebil Alliance was determined to take the whole galaxy… their invading forces too great in number and their simultaneous attack on all four worlds impossible to defend. As he raised his finger and gestured towards the hangar below, signaling the launch of the Tetrad’s prototype warp ship, he knew his coalition of the last four free worlds in the system could not hope to survive such an onslaught.
