Korg M01 turns the Nintendo DS into a portable music studio. Use the touch screen to layer 300 built in sounds across eight tracks each with up to 12 notes playing at once. The 16 step sequencer lets you arrange rhythms and patterns while adjusting reverb or delay effects in real time. Edit parameters on the fly with on screen controls that mimic a physical synthesizer’s workflow. Save projects locally or send them to another DS over wireless connection to share or remix. Released in 2010 this digital recreation of a legendary 1980s hardware synthesizer brings retro sound design tools to a handheld format. The original M1 workstation shaped countless tracks in the 80s and 90s making this port a niche but functional tool for composers on the go. With no official score or challenge based goals it appeals more to musicians than gamers but the tactile interface and creative possibilities earned it a 7.5 average on DS review sites.
