Ku Gyoku Den casts you as a wandering warrior-priest blasting through hordes of monsters in an open-world shooter. You run across terrain, fire projectiles in all eight directions, and gather coins and boosts to power up. The goal is to track down and destroy nine corrupted beings guarding rare gems. Combat feels tight and responsive, with simple controls that let you focus on dodging and firing. The layout encourages speedruns and repeat plays to unlock hidden paths. The MSX2 version adds split-screen two-player co-op, a rarity for late 80s Japanese arcade ports. While other editions are solo affairs, this mode shifts the vibe to a frantic tag-team brawl. With pixelated foes and a retro soundtrack, it feels like a relic from the golden era of shooter design. Though largely forgotten outside niche circles, the game’s straightforward action and optional multiplayer keep it replayable for fans of old-school couch co-op.
