About

Kyphus is an unfinished Atari 2600 prototype from Apollo that feels like a strange experiment gone wrong. You control a blocky character running through a colorful maze of sixty-four rooms while avoiding a laser-shooting cloud and a wandering robot. The game attempts to show pseudo-3D depth on the hardware, which was rare for the system at the time. Currently there is no collision detection so the enemies cannot hurt you. The screen displays debug data like hex coordinates and room numbers instead of proper score counters. This version exists as a single copy and offers a peek into what might have been a unique adventure title. Developers found hidden commands in the code like Protect, Destroy, and Invoke that suggest the player would once issue orders to the robot companion. Graphics for a large monkey also sit unused in the files where the current robot stands. Although the prototype lacks sound or gameplay mechanics, it remains a fascinating artifact of 1980s homebrew development history.
