Link The Faces of Evil is a side-scrolling platformer that strays from the top-down exploration of most Zelda entries. You move through levels on a world map unlocking new areas by clearing stages or defeating bosses. Combat and puzzles are straightforward with basic jumps and attacks. The art and sound lean into 90s multimedia with limited technical polish. Progression feels linear with few branching paths or hidden items. Developed during a rocky partnership between Nintendo and Philips this game arrived on the niche CD-i platform in 1993. Critics called it a watered-down Zelda clone with clunky controls and repetitive enemies. Nintendo officially distances the series from this title which remains a curiosity for completionists. Community forums note its historical context more than gameplay quality with some retro fans experimenting with speedruns for novelty.
Ganon and his cronies have seized the island of Koridai and kidnapped Princess Zelda. Link must fight through Ganon's minions to defeat the Faces of Evil and destroy Ganon to bring peace back to the island and save Princess Zelda.
