About Little Nightmares: Complete Edition

Little Nightmares: Complete Edition is a horror-themed puzzle-platformer from Tarsier Studios. Released in 2017, it follows Six, a malnourished girl trapped in the Maw, a decrepit iron ship crawling with grotesque creatures. The game blends eerie environments with slow, methodical gameplay. The Complete Edition adds three DLC chapters, expanding the story and challenges. Set in a bleak, distorted world, the game emphasizes atmosphere over action, with Six’s survival hinging on stealth and environmental puzzles. Ideal for players who enjoy unsettling narratives and methodical exploration. Available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

Gameplay

You control Six as she navigates the Maw’s decaying hallways, solving physics-based puzzles to progress. Movement is deliberate, sprinting exhausts you, so pacing is key. Enemies patrol in predictable patterns, but they’re often too large to fight, forcing you to hide or avoid. The DLC chapters introduce new mechanics like manipulating machinery and evading larger threats. Sound design amplifies tension, with creaking metal and distant growls. Sessions rarely last more than an hour due to difficulty spikes and the need to memorize enemy behavior. The game rewards patience, but its slow tempo and punishing sections may frustrate some.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community rates it 7.5/10, matching its IGDB score. 68% of players complete the base game, averaging 12 hours. DLC completion drops to 45%, with 60% of those taking over 20 hours. Reviews praise the atmosphere but note inconsistent pacing. One user calls it “haunting but uneven,” while another says “the horror lingers long after.” Community moods skew mixed, 30% “challenged,” 25% “impressed,” and 20% “frustrated.” 60% of players rate the DLC as essential, but 40% found it repetitive. The game’s 15 achievements take 12, 18 hours to unlock, with 12% of players 100% completing it.

PlayPile's Take

Little Nightmares is a polarizing pick. Fans of atmospheric horror and methodical puzzle-solving will appreciate its unsettling vibe and clever set pieces. The DLC expands the story but adds minimal new mechanics. At $25 for the Complete Edition, it’s reasonably priced, but the 12-hour average playtime and uneven difficulty may deter casual players. Achievements are sparse but meaningful. Best for those who enjoy horror with slow-burn tension and don’t mind repeated deaths. Not a must-play, but a memorable experience for the right audience.

Storyline

Little Nightmares follows Six, a small, raincoat-clad child trapped in a mysterious underwater vessel called the Maw. The Maw is inhabited by grotesque, monstrous residents who prey on the helpless. As Six navigates through disturbing environments, she must solve puzzles and avoid being captured. The journey gradually reveals the dark and oppressive nature of the Maw and its inhabitants. Driven by hunger and desperation, Six’s actions ultimately reflect the cycle of predation within the world she inhabits.
