Lord of Apocalypse is an action RPG with a focus on frenetic combat and character customization. Up to four players team up to battle hordes of enemies in stages packed with quick-time events button-mashing sequences and explosive finishers. You gather a roster of hunters upgrade their skills swap gear and summon creatures to turn the tide of battle. Each level throws waves of foes at you culminating in boss fights and guest appearances from Square Enix franchises. The pacing is tight with a focus on chaining attacks and managing elemental weaknesses. The game stands out for its co-op flexibility letting friends jump in locally or online. While it shares DNA with Monster Hunter and God Eater it adds its own spin with arcade-style progression and over-the-top magic attacks. Released in 2011 it runs smoothly on Vita and PSP with a charm that holds up despite dated visuals. The mix of co-operative chaos and deep builds keeps matches lively even if the story takes a backseat.
