About

Lunatic Dawn is a 1993 RPG built around deep character customization and open-ended exploration. You start by setting your character's age, gender, and weaknesses, each choice directly alters stats like stamina, weapon skill, and charisma. The game drops you in a city with no set path, letting you wander freely through a world with day/night cycles. Survival hinges on managing hunger and exhaustion, as your character can die from either. Combat uses an isometric view with real-time movement, letting you issue commands on the fly instead of turn-based orders. Random encounters pop up on maps and in dungeons, blending action with strategy. The game leans into old-school Western RPG vibes more than its Japanese peers. Cities exist as utilitarian hubs for gear and training, stripped of detailed environments or scripted interactions. Players often note the abstract storytelling and lack of linear quests, focusing instead on self-directed progress. With minimal dialogue and a focus on mechanical depth, Lunatic Dawn offers a raw, player-driven experience that feels ahead of its time for its design philosophy.

Storyline

A long time ago, humans possessed unique power, that allowed them to create wonderful things and to build a highly advanced civilization. But it all ended when the chariots of the terrifying Death God attacked and destroyed the beautiful cities beyond the skies. Humans have lost their memories. And the magical powers from before started serving evil intentions... Although a Japanese game, Lunatic Dawn is much more similar to "old-school" Western RPGs than to its compatriots. For once, it is not a story-driven game. There are almost no scripted events, very few dialogues, etc. The overall theme of the game is quite abstract: the cities serve as places to buy equipment and learn combat techniques, but have no real locations (everything is accessed via a menu).
