Lux Pain is a narrative driven adventure for the Nintendo DS that blends text based storytelling with action elements. You play as Atsuki a teenager who gains supernatural abilities after a traumatic event. His mission to confront parasitic creatures called Silents drives a mystery filled with branching choices and multiple endings. The story unfolds through dialogue scenes character interactions and occasional mini games that test your decisions. The game stands out for its layered plot and morally complex characters. While not widely discussed in modern forums its 2008 release brought a mature tone to the visual novel genre with themes of grief and redemption. The DS format allows for portable play sessions but the dense story benefits from larger screens. Fans of branching narratives and slow burning mysteries might find it rewarding despite its dated presentation.
Lux-Pain is set in the historical Kisaragi City, a town plagued by mysteries from small mishaps to murders - with no logical explanation as to why these events occur. It seems "Silent", a worm born through hate and sadness, has infected humans and forced them to commit atrocious crimes. Atsuki's parents are the victim of such crimes. To avenge his parents, Atsuki goes through a dangerous operation to acquire Lux-Pain in his left arm, a power so strong that it turns his right eye golden when using it to seek and destroy Silent for good.
