M.A.D. is a fast-paced shooter where you guard six energy stations from waves of enemy rockets. You control a bottom-screen photon cannon, shooting projectiles that dive toward your targets. Enemies flash white before dropping attacks, giving you a split second to react. Each successful defense keeps the stations intact, but one hit per station starts a countdown to destruction. The game ends when all six posts fall. A two-player mode flips roles: one plays defense while the other guides enemy attacks via cursor, switching sides each round. This adds a tactical layer, forcing players to think offensively and defensively. The split-screen co-op feels ahead of its time for 1983 Atari 2600 hardware. While the single-player loop is straightforward and tense, the competitive twist in two-player mode introduces unpredictability. Community archives note its simple graphics still convey sharp tension, and the role-swapping mechanic remains engaging for local multiplayer. Though short on levels, its replay value comes from dynamic enemy patterns and the back-and-forth of team play.
