About

Märchen Maze casts you as a young girl navigating a floating maze of platforms, dodging enemies and aiming to survive. Using an isometric perspective in some versions, you maneuver Alice through a skybound world where falling into the void means instant death. Your main tool is the "shabon ball" bubble, which you can fire and charge to knock foes off their perches or break through obstacles. Every stage is a race against the clock in certain versions, where 180 seconds must be stretched between avoiding attacks, leaping gaps, and taking down bosses. The gameplay mixes platforming agility with bullet-hell tension, requiring quick reflexes and precise timing. The game stands out for its punishing but fair challenge and clever use of bubbles as both attack and defense. While the Arcade and Sharp X68000 versions keep the time limit, the PC Engine port removes it entirely. The 2009 Virtual Console release introduced it to new audiences, and retro gaming communities often praise its inventive mechanics. With no health system to rely on, every move feels risky but rewarding, making it a standout in the shooter-platform hybrid niche.
