About Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes

Capcom released this 2000 arcade brawler that pits superheroes against their video game counterparts. It serves as the fourth entry in a long-running franchise where you choose one character to lead a team of three. The roster spans Marvel comics icons like Spider-Man and Iron Man alongside Capcom stars such as Ryu and Mega Man. Players jump into matches on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Dreamcast, or original arcade cabinets. The design trimmed the controls down to four attack buttons plus two for calling assist characters. This shift aimed to make the chaotic action accessible to casual players while keeping the depth that veterans expect from the series.

Gameplay

You build a team of three fighters and swap them out mid-combo during battles. The core loop involves landing hits with your active character while waiting for assists from teammates to extend combos or rescue you from danger. Matches happen in a 3D space where characters jump between foreground and background layers. A new air-combo system allows players to chain attacks while floating, creating long strings of damage that were impossible in previous titles. You can cancel normal moves into special attacks or super moves by spending meter. The simplified four-button layout removes complex command inputs but requires precise timing to manage assist calls effectively. Sessions last a few minutes per round with intense back-and-forth action.

What Players Think

Players on IGDB have rated this title an 82.6 out of 100 based on 124 user reviews. The community describes the vibe as chaotic fun with high skill ceilings despite the simplified controls. Average playtime hovers around 35 hours for those chasing completion, though many stop after mastering the competitive ladder. Review snippets frequently mention the sheer scale of the character roster and the satisfaction of pulling off long combos. Critics note that the shift to three-on-three tag fighting created a faster pace than its predecessor. The mood remains positive even years later with active online lobbies finding matches at any time of day.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best for fighters who enjoy fast-paced action and deep team strategies. At a modest price point on modern consoles, it offers hundreds of hours of replayability without needing a constant subscription. You can unlock achievements by completing specific story modes or reaching high ranks in versus play. The roster size ensures you find characters that fit your preferred style immediately. It lacks the polish of newer entries but delivers a raw competitive experience that holds up well. If you want a fighting game where every match feels different, pick this one up now.

Storyline

Two years after the battle against Onslaught, peace in the planet Earth was restored until a mysterious entity named Abyss, shrouded the atmosphere with his dark energy. It was consumed within a sphere that the being was holding close to him; With his immense strength, it blew passed a desert and the plant life was also ruined. A pirate known as Ruby Heart discovered the energy and warned the heroes and villains from the two camps who were fighting amongst themselves. Together, they must stop this new nemesis before the Earth and the universe is destroyed by Abyss' terrible power. In the end of the battle, the heroes and villains make a truce while taking a joy cruise on Ruby Heart's ship flying through the skies of the Earth; She holds the orb in her hand then casts it into the sea thus seeing the last of Abyss and closing the rivalry between Marvel and Capcom.
