About

Masagoro is a first-person horror game that drops you into the crumbling halls of a shuttered Japanese ryokan. You wander its decaying rooms and hidden corridors searching for fragments of its forgotten history while fending off supernatural threats. The story unfolds through scattered notes, warped photographs, and eerie environmental details that piece together why the hotel was abandoned decades ago. Combat is minimal but tense, emphasizing stealth and quick reflexes over brute force. The atmosphere leans heavily into isolation and quiet dread, with sound design and lighting used to ratchet up unease. The game’s setting is its strongest hook, carefully recreated to mirror real-world abandoned inns from the early 20th century. Developer DorsalFin Studio consulted with urban explorers to nail the decayed aesthetics, from peeling shoji screens to overgrown gardens. While the runtime clocks in at roughly two to three hours, the focus on ambiance and subtle storytelling makes it memorable for fans of atmospheric horror. The Switch port lets you carry the chill with you, though some puzzles may feel underdeveloped compared to the strong visual and narrative foundation.

Storyline

There is an abandoned Ryokan called "Masagoro" that was closed in the early Showa period. He was locked up in Masagoro where he has got interested to explore. The past of Masagoro has been revealed everytime he found some clues in the residuals. The main character who used to work in "Meshii-village", remembered an abandoned Ryokan that had been remained in his memory one day. He decided to go to the place as he is interested in exploring abandoned buildings. The stage as an abandoned Ryokan (Japanese-style hotel): This Ryokan is designed in the style of early Showa period (1926-1989), based on the samples of Japanese ruined hotels exist and the advices by the explorers of abandoned hotels. Two to Three hours to complete the game: This is a horror game where you explore the inside of Masagoro while fighting against the evil spirits that would attack you.
