Matrix Runner started life as an ambitious project for the Sega VR headset back in 1993. Players explore a polygonal 3D world to investigate a murder mystery inside a digital realm known as the Matrix. You navigate through this cyberpunk environment alone since it is strictly a single player experience on the Sega Mega Drive. The game was designed to let you use head tracking to look around while solving puzzles and uncovering clues within the virtual space. What stands out is how ahead of its time this title felt compared to other 90s adventures. It promised full immersion through VR long before that technology became common. Even though it never fully launched on the headset as originally planned, the concept remains a fascinating piece of gaming history from ZCT Systems Group. The cyberpunk setting and mystery elements gave it a distinct flavor that set it apart from standard platformers of the era. This project shows just how experimental developers were willing to get with new hardware during that specific period in console history.
