About

Matryoshka is a visual novel that forces you to confront the idea of being someone else. You play as Elizabeth, stranded in a forest during a school trip, plagued by a spectral voice in your dreams. The Matryoshka, a cryptic entity, pushes you to question your own identity through a second Elizabeth who seems both familiar and alien. The game uses simple text and static images to explore heavy themes, what it means to lose yourself, to crave connection, or to become unrecognizable to others. Choices here don’t just shape the story but force you to reckon with the cost of erasing who you are. The game’s emotional weight comes from its refusal to offer easy answers. Community reviews highlight its unsettling atmosphere and the way it lingers long after you finish. With a 4.8/5 average on indie forums, Matryoshka stands out for packing deep philosophical questions into a short, unassuming package. The lack of flashy visuals makes the existential dread feel more intimate, like you’re trapped in the same loop as the characters. It’s a quiet, haunting experience that asks you to stare into the mirror, and decide if you want to stay there.

Storyline

You are Elizabeth and so is she. You are on a school trip in the middle of the woods. Each night you are haunted by a voice within your dreams. A voice belonging to a mysterious creature called the Matryoshka. What does it want? Why is it only talking to you? What does it want you to do to the other Elizabeth? What does it mean to want to be someone else? What does it mean to want to stop being yourself? Your rib cage is welded shut and you're never getting out.
