MechWarrior lets you take control of a giant battle mech and fight through missions on a war-torn planet. You pick your missions, trade mechs and parts, hire teammates, and move across the map to build your force. The game blends shooting with strategic management as you upgrade gear and plan attacks. A slow-burn story unfolds over five in-game years as you track down the mercenaries who killed your character’s family and stole a key heirloom. The 1989 DOS/X68000 title stands out for letting players shape their path more freely than later entries in the series. Its focus on mech customization and open-ended mission selection made it a foundation for the BattleTech universe. With no multiplayer and a relatively short runtime, it’s a niche pick for fans of old-school sim-shooters. Still, its blend of combat and story setup earned it a cult following, especially among retro gaming communities.

Storyline

The story follows a mechwarrior by the name of Gideon Braver Vandenburg. His family has been murdered and the chalice that proves he is heir to the throne of his planet, Ander's Moon, has been stolen. Without the chalice he is exiled. Gideon must develop a force of mechwarriors and battlemechs, find those who committed the acts against his family, and take his revenge within five years or all is lost. The story ends with the defeat of the Dark Wing Mercenaries.
