Players train and battle with robotic beetles called Medarots, customizing their loadouts with special medals to outmaneuver opponents. The Kuwagata edition starts with a stag beetle build, shaping early strategies around its strengths. Single-player campaigns mix exploration and story beats while multiplayer modes let players trade punches in head-to-head matches. This version splits content with the Kabuto release, locking certain Medarots and medals behind each edition. The Game Boy Color’s palette brings brighter visuals compared to its predecessor but the 1999 release remains untranslated, keeping original dialogue in Japanese. A 2002 GBA remake expanded the game’s reach but purists stick to the handheld roots. Competitive battling and team-building depth keep it engaging despite its age.
