Medarot Kabuto Version is a turn-based RPG from 1997 where you train mechanical beetles to battle in organized tournaments. You play as Hikaru Agata, collecting and upgrading robotic creatures called Medarots to challenge the Roborobo Gang. The Kabuto version gives you a Metal Beetle to start while Kuwagata players begin with Head Scissors. Each version locks in exclusive Medarots and upgrade items. Battles mix stat-based combat with equipment swaps to outmaneuver enemies. The game’s split versions and mechanical creature design stand out. Kabuto and Kuwagata offer distinct builds and progression paths rarely seen in 90s portable RPGs. While strictly monochrome on Game Boy it gains subtle color tints on Game Boy Color and Super Game Boy. A revised edition called Medarot Perfect Edition came later on Bandai’s WonderSwan but kept the same visual style. No official English translation exists so it remains a cult classic for Japanese RPG collectors. The core game’s sequel Medarot 2 arrived the same year but builds on this title’s foundation.
