Capcom released this 1987 NES title as their first major home console project. You play as Mega Man, a robotic hero created by Dr. Light to stop Dr. Wily from seizing the world. The game launched alongside six other Robot Masters that you must defeat. It later appeared on Wii U, Wii, and Nintendo 3DS versions. This is the origin story of a massive franchise that defined the action-platformer genre. The pitch is simple: shoot enemies, learn their patterns, and beat the stage bosses to gain their weapons.
You run left or right across scrolling screens while jumping over spikes and pits. Your primary weapon shoots standard blue energy blasts at incoming robots and projectiles. Each boss drops a special weapon upon defeat that gives you an advantage against specific rivals in the rest of the game. You must choose which order to tackle these seven empires because some stages are harder than others. The controls feel tight, requiring precise timing for jumps and shots. You cannot save your progress mid-level, so memorizing enemy placement is essential for survival.
Players rate this title highly with an IGDB score of 75.7 out of 100 based on 283 ratings. The community moods lean heavily toward nostalgia and challenge, often citing the high difficulty as a feature rather than a flaw. Average playtime for a first run hovers around four hours, though completionists spend significantly longer mastering every stage. Review snippets frequently mention the tight controls and memorable soundtrack as standout elements. No other site tracks how many users have actually beaten the final boss versus those who quit early, but the high rating suggests most finish the game despite its brutal difficulty spikes.
This is a solid pick if you want to understand why action games exist today. The price varies depending on your platform, but it remains one of the best value retro experiences available. You can earn achievements for speedruns and collecting all weapons. It is not for players who want a casual afternoon; you need patience and practice here. The game does not hold your hand. If you enjoy tight mechanics and punishing difficulty without modern quality-of-life features, this is the one to play.
Brilliant scientist Dr. Light conceived the construction of fully-operational human-like experimental robots to perform specific everyday duties. Dr. Light, and his assistant Dr. Wily, encouraged by their very first near-human robot - Mega Man - proceeded to develop six additional Humanoids, all programmed to perform prescribed rituals. But, with the exception of Mega Man, all of Dr. Light's near-human robot experimentation went awry. Assistant Dr. Wily turned disloyal, re-programming Dr. Light's Humanoids, now bent on destroying opposition so Dr. Wily could control the world and its resources. Resisting re-programming, Mega Man is chosen as the defender of the universe and its inhabitants. Mega Man dares to single-handedly penetrate seven separate empires of Monsteropolis, eliminating the leaders and followers of these sovereignties.
