Megatack splits each round into two distinct challenges. First, space monsters swarm down, dropping bombs and hopping toward your ship. You fire in three directions to destroy them before they reach the screen’s bottom. Later waves mix monster types and scale up difficulty. After clearing them, a growing ring appears, splitting into smaller rings as you shoot it. Let it expand too much and it’ll tractor-beam your ship, crushing it in a freeze-frame death. Your ship’s firing pattern shifts here, only straight up works, making the rings a tense, focused puzzle. The game’s charm lies in its dual nature: part rapid-fire shooter, part precision-based hazard management. Waves reset with clear patterns early on but devolve into chaotic randomness after the ninth round. Its life system is famously baffling, pod numbers act as countdowns while bonus lives pile up silently, often leaving players unsure how many chances they have. Released in 1980, it’s a relic of early arcade experimentation, balancing simplicity with tricky mechanics that still test reflexes and strategy.
