Metajo is a tactical role-playing game where you command a team of powerful female warriors in turn-based battles. The action takes place on grid-based maps viewed from above. Players issue commands to main characters while supporting units follow automated behaviors. Each fight unfolds on isolated screens where stats and positioning determine outcomes. After victories, experience points unlock new abilities. The story follows Mayumi Tanaka and her allies as they clash with oppressive forces in a world where ancient Japan merged with advanced meta-topology research. A mix of strategy and character growth drives the conflict between empowered women and reactionary authorities. Set in an alternate Heian-era Japan thousands of years after a scientific revolution, the game blends historical aesthetics with sci-fi elements. Released in 1996 for the PC-9800 series, it features a niche but dedicated following among tactical RPG enthusiasts. Developer R-Force Software crafts a detailed system where unit placement and meta-women's unique abilities shape combat. The blend of narrative progression through dialogue and strategic depth in battles creates a distinctive experience for players who enjoy calculated warfare and character-driven stories.
Many years ago, in imperial Japan, advances in a mysterious science called "meta-topology" have led to the unexpected prosperity of the Heian era. A special university was founded by the scientists, where researches in bio- and nano-technology were conducted. Since women dominated society during that time, they were the ones imbued with the powers of meta-topology. A series of conflicts between reactionary governments and the "meta-women", as they began calling themselves, continued thousands years into the future. Led by Mayumi Tanaka, president of the astronomy department, a group of young women tries to protect their existence using their remarkable powers.
