Metal Eye 2 casts you as Wirg, a scientist caught in a sci-fi crisis after his employer’s android research facility is attacked. Fleeing to a desolate town, you lead a trio of allies through a large world map filled with towns, dungeons, and wastelands. Combat unfolds in first-person turn-based battles where enemies pop up directly in the environment rather than separate screens. Towns use isometric views while the rest of the world sticks to top-down exploration. You collect resources, upgrade gear, and figure out the mystery behind the attack that upended your life. The game’s 1993 release on PC-9800 and FM Towns platforms gave it technically ambitious visuals for the era. Though tied to its predecessor’s universe, it stands as a self-contained RPG with a methodical pacing and detailed world design. The combat’s seamless integration into exploration sets it apart from contemporaries, and the sheer size of the interconnected map, spanning dozens of screens, offers scale rare in early ’90s JRPGs. Fans of methodical, story-driven adventures might find its deliberate design intriguing.
