About Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

PlatinumGames took the reins for this 2013 action title after Kojima Productions handed off control. It stars Raiden, a cyborg ninja armed with a high-frequency blade designed to slice through steel and flesh alike. The game dropped on PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and Mac just before February ended that year. Players follow a former child soldier hired by private military contractors who gets pulled into a fight against rogue cyborgs. The story focuses on revenge and the cost of war rather than stealth tactics found in other entries. This standalone adventure leans hard into over-the-top combat mechanics while keeping the franchise's political themes intact. It stands as a distinct entry that prioritizes fast-paced destruction over careful planning.

Gameplay

You control Raiden with a katana that slices almost anything on screen. The core loop involves dodging attacks, parrying incoming strikes, and then unleashing combos to dismember enemies in seconds. A dedicated Zangeki mode lets you switch between different cut styles to exploit enemy weaknesses or clear crowds instantly. Boss fights demand precise timing since you must block and counter specific patterns while managing your energy meter. The game offers a single-player campaign with optional boss-only challenges and VR training missions included in the PC version. DLC content adds three more story chapters featuring Blade Wolf and Jetstream Storm. You can customize Raiden's armor to change stats or appearance without altering gameplay balance. Every session feels like a choreographed dance where one wrong move leads to instant death.

What Players Think

Critics and players alike rated this title highly, with Metacritic sitting at 83 out of 100 and IGDB showing an average score of 82.2 from over 500 ratings. The PlayPile community describes the vibe as hardcore, intense, and occasionally atmospheric. Sixty achievements exist for players to chase, though only 21.4% unlock them on average. The rarest challenge is "Amateur Radio Operator" which just 1.50% of users have earned so far. Review snippets often highlight the difficulty spike during boss encounters as a major talking point. Many users spend significant time mastering the parry system before moving forward. The community mood leans toward frustration mixed with satisfaction when finally beating a difficult fight. These numbers show a dedicated player base that respects the challenge but finds the grind rewarding.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best if you enjoy fast combat systems and don't mind high difficulty spikes. The PC version includes all DLC missions and extra armor options for a complete experience. You get 60 achievements to track, with the rarest one requiring serious dedication to unlock. At launch it carried a standard premium price point which remains relevant today given the content included. Do not expect a stealth simulation since this title forces constant engagement. The satisfaction comes from mastering the slicing mechanics rather than exploring a vast world. If you want a challenging action game that respects your time through tight controls, this fits the bill perfectly.

Storyline

Raiden is a cyborg armed with a high-frequency blade, powerful enough to cut giant unmanned combat gears in two with a single slice. He is contracted for VIP protection, military training and other duties by PMSCs (Private Military and Security Companies) in a developing country, until he finds himself face to face with a mysterious force commanding a multitude of cyborgs like him…
