About Metal Slug

Metal Slug dropped in arcades back in April 1996 from Nazca Corporation under SNK Playmore. This run-and-gun classic follows Peregrine Falcon soldiers Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving as they battle the Rebel Army led by General Donald Morden. The story kicks off in 2028 when a military coup threatens global stability. You can find this title on everything from Neo Geo systems to modern PC, PlayStation, and mobile devices. It remains the first entry in a franchise defined by heavy artillery and tank warfare against overwhelming odds.

Gameplay

You sprint forward while blasting enemies with a massive array of weapons ranging from submachine guns to rocket launchers. The game demands constant movement since standing still means death. Collect items like beer cans or food to boost your health, then grab power-ups to upgrade your main gun into something that fires in all directions. You can hop into the titular metal slug tank at any moment to crush groups of soldiers instantly. Multiplayer modes let a friend join your squad for co-op chaos. Controls feel tight and responsive, punishing missed jumps or slow reactions immediately.

What Players Think

The IGDB community rated this title 82.2 out of 100 based on 273 user reviews. Players often cite the high difficulty and precise shooting mechanics as reasons for their long engagement times. Average playthroughs hover around eight hours for a single run, though many return to unlock hidden weapons and perfect runs. Community sentiment leans heavily toward nostalgic appreciation for the pixel art and fluid animations. Review snippets frequently mention the satisfaction of destroying enemy tanks with a well-placed grenade. The multiplayer mode remains active on various platforms, proving the co-op experience still holds up today.

PlayPile's Take

Buy this if you want a challenging arcade shooter that respects your time and skill. The price varies by platform but usually stays under twenty dollars on sale. You can track progress with numerous achievements tied to specific weapon completions or speed runs. This game does not hold your hand during tough boss fights, so expect to die often. It suits veterans of the genre who enjoy fast reflexes over cinematic storytelling. Grab it now if you want to test your aim against a relentless army of rebels.

Storyline

The Metal Slug storyline stretches from the beginning of the era of modern-day terrorism, set in the near-future of 2028. There are two militant factions that struggle for power: the Rebellion and the Regular Army. The Regular Army is a well-equipped, modern-day force run by various nations around the world. The Rebellion is comprised of various small, organized militant groups, ranging from terrorists to splinter groups of military forces driven by a hunger for power. The Regular Army is a very formidable force. However, it lacks effectiveness due to the widespread corruption within the chain of command. Other officials often deny the reports and recommendations given to them by intelligence officers. This often leads to intelligence failures that result in dramatic consequences. Vice Admiral Donald Morden of the Regular Army Marine Corps is one of the main characters that sparks the events of Metal Slug. He has a reputation of being a tough, efficient, and caring officer of the Regular Army, and is held in high regard by his troops. He is also a caring father to his son. However, Morden immediately defects over to the Rebellion when his son is killed in the Central Park bombing caused by an intelligence failure on the part of the Regular Army. He self-promoted to General. In 2026, a year after the attempted assassination of the President of the United States launched by the Rebellion under General Donald Morden's command, the Rebellion launched a massive attack against the Regular Army forces around the world. Although the Regular Army intelligence agency had many indications that such an attack was imminent, Regular Army officials again ignored the warnings. With the Regular Army forces surprised, the Rebellion nearly annihilated them with their superior numbers and emergent technologies.
