About Metal Slug 2

Metal Slug 2 dropped in January 1998 as SNK Playmore's second entry into their legendary run-and-gun series. DotEmu handled the modern porting effort for platforms like PC, PlayStation 3, and mobile devices. You play as a member of the Peregrine Falcon squad alongside new recruits Eri Kasamoto and Fiolina Germi. Your mission involves stopping General Morden from taking over the world with his army and a sudden Martian alliance. The game is a pure arcade shooter that demands quick reflexes and precise aiming across multiple levels filled with tanks, helicopters, and bizarre enemies. It retains the chaotic energy of the original while adding new playable characters and vehicles to the mix.

Gameplay

You sprint through side-scrolling stages while shooting everything that moves. The core loop involves clearing rooms of soldiers, destroying heavy machinery like tanks, and avoiding environmental hazards. You can switch between four distinct weapons found throughout each level or pick up power-ups to upgrade your current loadout. One session usually means pushing through ten minutes of intense firefights before reaching a boss. Controls feel tight on PC and consoles, allowing for precise jumping and shooting even when things get chaotic. Co-op play lets a second player join the action immediately, splitting the enemy fire or carrying heavy weapons together. The vehicles add a layer of tactical depth where you can drive tanks to crush enemies or fly jets to bypass ground obstacles entirely.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community rates this title heavily with an average score of 81.5 out of 100 based on 175 user ratings. Players often describe the mood as frantic but fair, noting that deaths usually feel like a result of player error rather than unfair design. The average playtime sits around 6 hours for a single run through the campaign, though many users log over 20 hours chasing all achievements and unlocking every character skin. Review snippets frequently mention the high difficulty spike in later stages as a defining trait that keeps veterans engaged. Completion rates hover near 45 percent for first-time players on harder settings, indicating the game demands persistence to finish without using infinite continues or cheat codes found in the arcade original.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth buying if you enjoy fast-paced shooters that punish hesitation but reward mastery of movement. The $10 price point feels reasonable given the amount of content and replayability locked behind achievements. You will not find a better 2D run-and-gun experience on modern systems that captures the raw arcade feel so well. The challenge is steep, so expect to die often before you learn the boss patterns. Avoid this if you prefer narrative-driven adventures or relaxed pacing. It stands as a solid test of skill that remains relevant nearly three decades after release.

Storyline

General Donald Morden, the antagonist from the first game is back once more with his army, bent on taking over the world. It is up to the Peregrine Falcon squad, who are now joined by two new characters: Eri Kasamoto and Fiolina Germi of the Sparrows Intelligence Unit, to save the day. As the levels unfold, it turns out that Morden has allied with Martians to help facilitate his plans. Eventually the tables are turned when Morden comes under attack and is betrayed by his Martian allies. An ad-hoc alliance is formed between the Peregrine Falcon squad and General Morden's army to combat the greater alien threat.
