About Metal Slug 4

Metal Slug 4 dropped in early 2002 as the fourth main entry from developer Noise Factory. It arrived on arcade machines and Neo Geo hardware before hitting consoles like PlayStation 2 and Xbox. You can also find it on PC, iOS, and Android today. This side-scrolling shooter kicks off one year after the last game with a cyber virus threat targeting global military systems. Marco and Fio return to lead the charge alongside new recruits Nadia and Trevor against the Amadeus terrorist group. The premise is simple chaos. Soldiers hop into tanks, spray bullets, and destroy waves of enemies while trying to stop a digital apocalypse before it wipes out every computer network on Earth.

Gameplay

You run through levels shooting everything that moves or looks suspicious. The core loop involves selecting Marco, Fio, Nadia, or Trevor for single player runs or hopping into co-op with three others. Each character brings different stats and special weapons to the table. You collect power-ups mid-stage to upgrade your gun from a basic pistol to heavy machine guns or rocket launchers. Tanks remain the star attraction here. Jumping into any Slug vehicle grants you health regeneration and devastating firepower against bosses. The control scheme feels tight on arcade sticks and responsive on gamepads. Sessions last anywhere from five to fifteen minutes per stage before you face another massive enemy commander.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community rates this title with an IGDB score of 71.9 out of 100 based on 102 user ratings. Players often describe the vibe as frantic and nostalgic, with many logging over ten hours to find all secret endings. Average completion time sits around eight hours for a standard run through the main story. Review snippets from our database highlight the game's visual polish and tight shooting mechanics as its strongest points. Some users note that the difficulty spikes near the end of certain stages, but most agree the co-op mode makes those sections manageable. The mood remains positive overall with players frequently returning to beat high scores or try different character combinations in multiplayer lobbies.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth buying if you want a fast-paced shooter that respects your time. It costs around ten dollars on most digital storefronts and offers twelve distinct achievements for completionists. Metal Slug 4 delivers solid action without unnecessary bloat. The co-op mode remains the best way to experience the campaign, even if the single-player path feels a bit linear by modern standards. You will not find a better value for classic arcade shooting mechanics today. Grab it on your preferred platform and prepare to shoot your way through Amadeus bases.

Storyline

One year after the events of Metal Slug 3, the world is trembling under the new threat of a mysterious but deadly cyber virus that threatens to attack and destroy any nation's military computer system. With Tarma and Eri unable to help due to their own assignments in the matter, Marco and Fio are called in to investigate the situation and are joined by two newcomers, Nadia and Trevor. In their investigation, the group discovers that a terrorist organization known as Amadeus is behind the nefarious plot and that they head into battle against Amadeus' forces, hoping to destroy the cyber virus before it gets the chance to wipe out the entire world's military computer system.
