About Metro: Last Light

Metro: Last Light arrived on May 14, 2013 as the sequel to Metro 2033. Developer 4A Games built this story-driven shooter based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel. You play as Artyom in a post-apocalyptic Moscow where the survivors live underground. The game launched across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Linux, Mac, and Wii U. This chapter continues after a disastrous attack on the Dark Ones. Stations fight for control using weapons from D6 while Artyom hunts a mysterious figure called the Prisoner. It is a first-person experience that leans heavily into horror elements rather than pure action. The world feels dangerous and claustrophobic from start to finish.

Gameplay

You move through dark tunnels where bullets function as currency. Carrying three weapons limits your choices since ammo is scarce. You often find yourself crouching behind crates to avoid detection by human patrols or mutant creatures. Stealth is the preferred route because wasting rounds on mutants leaves you defenseless later. When combat breaks out, you can switch between lethal takedowns and non-lethal options depending on the situation. Typical sessions involve managing your flashlight battery, filtering air, and rationing scarce supplies while pushing forward through linear levels. The controls feel tight and responsive during tense firefights or quiet stealth sections. You rarely have a direct path and must constantly assess threats before engaging them.

What Players Think

Critics gave this title solid marks with an 81 on Metacritic and 81.2 from IGDB based on 709 ratings. PlayPile members describe the atmosphere as creepy, though some find it competitive or chaotic. The community moods reflect the tension of the game itself. Most players report a completion rate that suggests they finish the story despite its difficulty spikes. Average playtime sits high because the stealth segments demand patience. Users note that the scarcity of resources creates genuine stress during encounters. Review snippets often mention how the sound design amplifies the fear of the unknown. The data shows a dedicated player base that values the narrative over endless multiplayer modes.

PlayPile's Take

Metro: Last Light is worth your time if you want a tight single-player campaign with real stakes. The price point varies by platform but the value lies in the 15 to 20 hours of focused gameplay. You will unlock achievements for completing specific stealth runs without being spotted. This is not a game for people who want constant shooting or easy difficulty settings. The horror elements work because the resources are limited. Finish this before trying the Redux version if you want the original vision intact. It remains one of the better entries in the survival shooter genre.

Storyline

The game picks up after the bad ending from Metro 2033, in which Artyom delivers a devastating attack on the mysterious supernatural race known as the Dark Ones. The station-cities of the Metro struggle for power using weapons found in D6. The player follows Artyom, the main protagonist from Metro 2033, as he searches for the mysterious "Prisoner", the supposed “key to survival – the last light in our darkest hour…”
