The narrative follows a fractured society fighting for survival against a mysterious threat, with dialogue and choices shaping the journey. The game earned praise for its tense atmosphere, detailed environments, and refined mechanics compared to 2011’s Metro 2033. Critics highlighted improved gunplay, voice acting, and the way lighting and sound amplify tension. However some noted repetitive level design and occasional AI issues.
