About Metro: Last Light Redux

Metro: Last Light Redux stands as the definitive edition of the 2014 shooter adventure from developer 4A Games. Released on August 26, 2014, this version runs on the upgraded 4A Engine and spans PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Linux, Mac, and Google Stadia. You play as Artyom in a post-apocalyptic Moscow where nuclear fallout has forced humanity into underground metro tunnels. The story picks up after the events of Metro 2033, sending you on a desperate quest to find a mysterious figure known as the Prisoner. This package includes all previous DLC and offers two distinct gameplay styles to alter how you approach the campaign.

Gameplay

You navigate dark corridors with limited resources while engaging in tactical combat or stealth. The core loop involves scavenging for parts, managing your gas mask filter, and deciding when to engage enemies directly or sneak past them. A typical session sees you checking your watch to monitor oxygen levels and scanning ammo counts without pausing the action. Two unique Play Styles let you shift the experience toward a slow-burn survival horror or a more direct Spartan approach. Melee animations received a full overhaul for this release, making close-quarters fights feel weightier. You can also enable Ranger Mode for an extra layer of difficulty that strips away helpful HUD elements entirely.

What Players Think

Players rate this title quite highly, with a Metacritic score of 76 and an IGDB average of 80 based on 259 ratings. The community generally describes the vibe as creepy or intense, reflecting the oppressive atmosphere of the setting. Completion rates tell a story about its difficulty; only 31.7% of players unlock all 49 achievements. The rarest feat is "Test Complete," which 5.20% of users have earned. Reviewers often note the high quality of the single-player campaign compared to many contemporaries. The historical low price sits at just $0.99, with current deals around $1.99 on GOG, making it a cheap entry point for those curious about the genre.

PlayPile's Take

Metro: Last Light Redux is worth your time if you want a strong narrative shooter that does not hold your hand. The price is negligible at under two dollars, and the 49 achievements offer plenty of extra work for completionists. It specifically suits players who enjoy resource management and tense stealth sequences over constant action. Ranger Mode adds genuine challenge for veterans tired of modern difficulty settings. Do not expect a perfect experience, as the survival elements can feel punishingly slow at times. This is a solid purchase that delivers a complete story without needing any additional content.

Storyline

The game picks up after the bad ending from Metro 2033, in which Artyom delivers a devastating attack on the mysterious supernatural race known as the Dark Ones. The station-cities of the Metro struggle for power using weapons found in D6. The player follows Artyom, the main protagonist from Metro 2033, as he searches for the mysterious "Prisoner", the supposed “key to survival – the last light in our darkest hour…”
