Metroid II: Return of Samus DX is a rumored port of the classic Game Boy adventure that never actually launched on shelves. Fans first spotted it as an image in a German gaming magazine claiming to show the title running with the Game Boy Color's full palette. The idea was to take Samus Aran's hunt for Metroids on SR388 and update it for the newer handheld hardware. Despite the excitement, this version remained nothing more than a concept or possibly a mock-up. There is no way to play it today since the development team never finished or released anything under this name. The story behind this title is messy because even people who worked on the original game have conflicting memories. Dan Owsen, a translator for Nintendo of America, stated he had no knowledge of any port plans and suspects the screenshot was fake. This lack of concrete evidence means the game exists only in rumors and old magazine pages. No one has verified if a prototype ever left the lab or if the color screenshots were just digital art meant to tease players. The project remains an unresolved piece of gaming history that some might wish actually existed for collectors.
