About Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption serves as the final chapter in Retro Studios' acclaimed trilogy on the Nintendo Wii. Released in August 2007, this first-person shooter and adventure title places players in control of Samus Aran during a galaxy-wide crisis. The Galactic Federation faces an existential threat from the Space Pirates and their use of Phazon, a mutagenic substance that corrupts worlds and beings alike. Samus must travel across various planets to destroy Phazon seeds before the corruption spreads further. The game features single-player action designed specifically for the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination, emphasizing precise aiming and movement mechanics throughout a harrowing mission to stop Dark Samus.

Gameplay

Sessions involve crossing alien environments on foot while managing a health system that degrades under Phazon exposure. You navigate complex 3D spaces using the left stick for movement and the right trigger for precise aiming. Combat requires switching between beam weapons like the Plasma Beam or Screw Attack to defeat diverse enemy types. The game introduces lock-on targeting and context-sensitive actions where you might grapple across gaps or blast through barriers. Multiplayer-like sequences let you coordinate with three other bounty hunters who provide support fire during specific encounters. You also manage a visor system to scan objects for lore or identify weak points on bosses. Movement feels fluid yet weighty, especially when performing aerial maneuvers or sprinting through tight corridors.

What Players Think

Players and critics alike rated this entry highly upon release and in retrospect. Metacritic holds the score at 90 out of 100 while IGDB lists an average rating of 86.9 based on 143 user reviews. The community mood leans heavily toward appreciation for the controller scheme, with many noting how well the Wii Remote handles aiming compared to other systems. Average playtime hovers around 12 hours for a standard run, though completionists often spend over 20 hours hunting for all Phazon seeds and upgrades. Review snippets frequently praise the visual fidelity of the time period and the intensity of the boss fights against Dark Samus. No major complaints surface regarding the story pacing, though some users note the difficulty spikes in later stages require multiple attempts to clear.

PlayPile's Take

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is a solid conclusion to the trilogy that offers tight shooting mechanics and a gripping narrative arc. The price point varies by region but remains reasonable for a full-length single-player experience on the Wii. You will earn roughly 15 achievements or trophies if you manage to find every collectible hidden across the planets. This title suits players who enjoy methodical exploration mixed with intense combat rather than casual arcade action. Avoid this only if you dislike first-person perspectives or struggle with motion controls. The final boss battle alone justifies a playthrough for fans of the franchise.

Storyline

The Galactic Federation's Base Sector Zero is under attack by Space Pirates. Samus must boot up the generator to restore the defense systems. But at the end of her path, someone awful is waiting for her. The war initiated by Dark Samus and the Space Pirates rages across many planets as they attempt to corrupt each with Phazon seeds. Players use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to explore alien landscapes, hunt for weapons and information, and destroy the seeds. Saving the planets from Corruption isn't enough, though. Eventually, players must take down Samus' mortal enemy, Dark Samus. Besides using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to pull off amazing feats like aiming and blasting in midair or at a full run, players also will have an array of different weapons at their disposal.
