"Anyone who played the original Midnight should know exactly what they're getting into. It might have been fun to throw an extra idea into play somewhere, but the sequel still provides the same fun-if-not-perfect gameplay of the original. If you enjoyed your first round and ached for more stages, this is a no-brainer. Others who might be interested can freely dive in with either game."

About

This side-scrolling shooter mixes platforming and gunplay as you fight through a dystopian future to rescue your family. You control a resistance operative dodging traps, leaping over hazards, and blasting waves of enemies in a race against time. The arcade roots shine through with tight controls and punishing difficulty, but the co-op mode lets another player join in to share the fire. It’s a chaotic sprint where timing and teamwork matter more than fancy graphics. The game’s standout is its co-op mode, which makes the relentless action a little less lonely. Originally hitting arcades in late 1989, it later ported to home systems like Mega Drive and C64, letting more players tackle the mission. While the visuals and sound feel firmly of their era, the fast-paced gameplay and shared chaos keep it memorable for retro fans who crave co-op brawls in pixelated settings.

Storyline

In the arcade version, two nameless brothers are on a mission to rescue their family from an entity known as King Crimson. In the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version, the main character is Johnny Ford who's a member of an operative group who shuts down drug cartels in South America. After completing his last mission, Johnny returned home only to find it in shambles, and he sees a note in which King Crimson kidnapped his entire family. The reason for the abduction is that Johnny's father, Malcolm Ford, was developing a serum which could help people break their addictions to all narcotics. Since the government is unable to help Johnny, he sets off on his own to rescue his family and destroy King Crimson's empire of evil for good.
