Mighty Bomb Jack is a 1986 platformer where you navigate 16 pyramid levels to rescue a royal family and defeat Belzebut. Split into action zones and puzzle-like Royal Palace rooms, the game tasks you with collecting bombs while dodging enemies and hazards. Power-ups like Mighty Coins let you manipulate treasure chests or turn enemies into cash, while Mighty Drinks extend your timer. Hidden paths and secret passages add layers of exploration, but hoarding more than 9 coins or 99 extra seconds kicks you into a punishing Torture Room. These rooms force you to complete jump counts to return, draining all collected boosts. The Royal Palace sections borrow directly from the 1985 game Bomb Jack, but action zones mix in new level design and hazards. The game’s punishing difficulty and clever item mechanics stand out, with Torture Rooms adding risk/reward tension. A 1986 Vs. Series version added two-player mode and tweaked secret passage locations. Despite its age, the Switch and 3DS ports let modern players tackle its tight controls and clever level design. With roots in Tecmo’s earlier work and a cameo in Tecmo Super Bowl’s halftime show, it’s a relic of arcade-era design that still rewards persistence.
