About

Mindwheel is a 1985 adventure game that blends philosophy with problem solving. You play an unnamed protagonist thrust into a desperate bid to save collapsing civilization through a neuro-electronic device. The mission involves navigating four surreal mental landscapes, each tied to a historically significant figure, to recover a mythical artifact. Text-heavy gameplay focuses on deciphering cryptic dialogue and abstract environments, with choices shaping the path through each mind. The tone shifts abruptly between dystopian politics and hallucinatory puzzles, reflecting the mind-bending nature of the journey. The game gained a cult following for its dense narrative and unconventional structure. Its 1980s retro platforms and reliance on pure text challenge modern players, but the ambition remains evident. While not a commercial hit, Mindwheel is remembered for daring to tackle existential themes in a genre often focused on simpler escapism. The unresolved ending and ambiguous clues have fueled player discussions for decades.

Storyline

In a dystopian future on the brink of collapse, Arch-Senator Hay-Seuss Pederson faces an enraged mob protesting outside the Palace of Post-Technological Studies. As society teeters on the edge of disaster, Pederson is summoned to the White House, where President Helen Honda and her advisors debate last-ditch efforts to save civilization. Pederson proposes using the Virgil Device, a controversial neuro-electronic propulsion experiment, as humanity’s final hope. Dr. Virgil, a renowned scientist and poet, is called upon to prepare the device for an urgent experiment. The next morning, an unnamed protagonist arrives for the mission, experiencing eerie visions and a sense of foreboding. Virgil explains the objective: the protagonist must travel through the minds of four powerful historical figures to retrieve The Wheel of Wisdom, an ancient artifact said to hold the key to humanity’s survival. The journey will culminate in an encounter with The Cave Master, the prehistoric being responsible for civilization’s earliest innovations. As the experiment begins, surreal images hint at the trials ahead, and the Mindwheel starts to turn.
