Missile Command 3D reimagines the 1980s arcade staple with three distinct modes. The original game tasks you with guiding flak clouds to intercept falling missiles and protect cities. The Jaguar version adds a 3D mode that keeps the same mechanics but gives explosions and terrain a pseudo-3D look. The third mode swaps flak for lasers and shifts to first-person view. You toggle between three cannons using the keypad to blast missiles and bosses across nine stages. No leading shots required here, just quick reflexes and button mashing. The game leans into variety more than polish. Each mode feels like a separate experience from the others rather than refinements of the core idea. Virtual Missile Command’s first-person angle was ahead of its time for the platform, though the Jaguar’s hardware struggles to render smooth 3D. Still, it’s a curious snapshot of how developers experimented with early 3D conversions. Released as Atari’s last major Jaguar title in 1995, it’s a footnote in the console’s history but a fun artifact for retro shooter fans.
