"To an extent, we feel we’re being hard on Moon Raider, but compared to the plethora of excellent Metroidvania titles on Switch, this title is just 'all right'. It’s not bad, but its various flaws mean it's certainly not great, either. At around three hours in length, there are absolutely worse ways to spend your time, and the game does also include a neat co-op option to increase its longevity somewhat. Ultimately though, if you’re after a thrilling, memorable 2D action title with a dash of originality, this sadly isn’t it."

Moon Raider is a 2D platformer where you play Ava, a selenite girl racing against time to steal moon gems from alien-occupied tunnels. Your mom’s life hangs in the balance so you’ll leap over bottomless pits dodge laser grids and outwit robo-soldiers armed with plasma turrets. Each level mixes precise platforming with quick reflexes as you navigate crumbling corridors and automated defense systems. The further you go the more the moon’s underworld reveals its twisted tech and hidden dangers. The game stands out for its tight controls and escalating tension. Boss fights force you to adapt to shifting environments while resource management adds urgency you only have so many health pickups. With ports on mobile consoles and PCs it’s easy to dive into its 8-bit inspired visuals and pulpy sci-fi narrative. Ava’s personal stakes make the chaos feel immediate even as you grapple with alien weaponry and collapsing terrain.
Ava is the young daughter of the brilliant-but-aging scientist Dr. Cavor and Selene, the former queen of the moon. As a selenite, Selene's life depends on the special energy only moon gems can provide. With none left and time running out, Dr. Cavor enlists his daughter to raid the moon of as many gems as she can find! Ava must survive the treacherous catacombs deep beneath the surface of the moon. Her enemies, a legion of corrupt aliens that now rule the moon with force, are far less primitive than they first appear. Their world is full of terrifying technology, deadly traps, and armed soldiers at the ready. Ava soon realizes that the only way to save her mother is to save the moon from itself.
