About Mortal Kombat II

Mortal Kombat II arrived in arcades back in 1993 before landing on consoles like the SNES and Sega Genesis shortly after. This second chapter in the franchise expands the roster with fan favorites like Kitana, Kung Lao, and Shao Kahn while deepening the lore surrounding Outworld. Players can jump into this brutal brawler on modern systems including PlayStation 3 or hunt down original hardware copies. The game sets up a high stakes tournament where Earthrealm warriors fight to stop Shao Kahn from claiming their world. It is a classic fighting experience that defined the genre for years and remains one of the most recognizable titles in gaming history.

Gameplay

Sessions revolve around one-on-one combat where you select a character and trade blows until an opponent falls. You execute combos, block incoming attacks, and perform special moves by pressing specific button sequences. The standout feature is the ability to finish defeated foes with graphic finishing moves that vary by character and match conditions. You can toggle the gore level or disable fatalities entirely if you prefer a cleaner fight. Multiplayer matches let you challenge friends locally while single player modes pit you against CPU opponents with increasing difficulty. Controls feel tight and responsive, demanding precise timing for successful counters and combos rather than just mashing buttons.

What Players Think

Players on PlayPile have rated this title at 76.4 out of 100 based on 318 IGDB submissions. The community mood leans heavily toward nostalgia with many users citing it as a defining childhood experience. Average playtime hovers around 45 hours for those tackling the full arcade mode and hidden challenges. Completion rates show that finding secret characters like Noob Saibot remains a popular goal for dedicated fans. Review snippets frequently mention the iconic status of Shao Kahn and the memorability of the stage fatalities. Some critics note the difficulty spike in later rounds but agree the core combat loop holds up well even decades later.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth your time if you want to see where modern fighting mechanics started or if you simply love watching characters turn opponents into blood sprays. You can grab a digital version for as low as $7.99 on Green Man Gaming. Expect to spend time unlocking hidden fighters and mastering the brutal fatality system that made this series famous. It is not a perfect game by modern standards but it captures a specific era of arcade violence perfectly. Skip it only if graphic content offends you since fatalities are central to the entire experience.

Storyline

Following his defeat, Shang Tsung begs his master, Shao Kahn, to spare his life. He tells Shao Kahn that the invitation for Mortal Kombat cannot be turned down, and if they hold it in Outworld, the Earthrealm warriors must attend. Kahn agrees to this plan, and restores Tsung's youth. He extends the invitation to Raiden, who gathers his warriors and takes them into Outworld. The tournament is dangerous, as Shao Kahn has the home field advantage, and an Outworld victory will unbalance the furies and allow Outworld to subsume Earthrealm.
