Mortal Kombat X arrives as the tenth main entry in this brutal one-on-one fighting series from NetherRealm Studios. Released on April 13, 2015, it serves as a direct sequel to the 2011 reboot and brings the action to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The story picks up two decades later when Shinnok returns with an army from the Netherrealm. Players control veterans like Sonya Blade alongside new blood such as her daughter Cassie and Outworld Emperor Kotal Kahn. This title keeps the fast-paced combat of its predecessor while adding three character variations per fighter. Each variation changes available moves and weapons to keep every match feeling fresh against a backdrop of gore and high-stakes tournament play.
The fight mechanics rely on standard punches, kicks, and blocks to build combos that end in special attacks or fatalities. A sprint gauge returns from Mortal Kombat 4 allowing characters to close distance quickly. The core loop involves managing three energy tiers to activate X-Ray moves for massive damage or EX moves for enhanced speed. Characters can also interact with the environment to reposition themselves or pick up objects as weapons during a brawl. Every fighter now offers three distinct variations that alter their move set and playstyle. Sessions involve chaining attacks, breaking combos from opponents, and executing precise timing for devastating finishers. The controls feel tight, rewarding players who master the rhythm of offense and defense in these intense one-on-one clashes.
Critics and players have given Mortal Kombat X solid scores with Metacritic at 76 and IGDB sitting at 81.9 out of 100 based on 482 ratings. The PlayPile community describes the vibe as competitive, intense, chaotic, and hardcore based on recent votes. Players have unlocked an average of only 12.9 percent of the 73 available achievements in the game. The rarest feat is "Lands-Down" which has been earned by just 1.50 percent of users. Average playtime data suggests a steep learning curve for those wanting to master all variations and modes. Most reviews highlight the brutal finishers and deep mechanics as reasons for high replay value despite the difficulty spike in ranked matches.
This game suits players who want a serious fighting experience with deep customization options per character. The current price of 3.99 on Green Man Gaming makes it an easy buy compared to its historical low of 16.79. You will spend time grinding achievements, especially that elusive Lands-Down trophy. The roster is large and the three variations add real depth to every matchup. Do not expect a casual experience since the community votes indicate a hardcore audience. If you like high-octane fighting games with brutal animations and complex mechanics, this title delivers exactly what it promises without fluff.
The plot is set about 20 years after the events of the previous game where the ending revealed that Shinnok used the void after Shao Kahn's death to attack Earthrealm with his army of Netherrealm forces. Several characters work together to steal Shinnok's amulet and imprison him inside, but eventually Mileena hatches a plan to release Shinnok by bringing the amulet to Quan Chi who escaped when Shinnok was imprisoned. The gap in years is mainly used to introduce the new characters to the cast, such as Cassie, the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade (who married and divorced), Kotal Kahn as the new emperor of the Outworld, and Takeda, the son of Kenshi.
