Motor Mania is a top-down driving challenge on the Commodore 64 where your goal is to drive as far as possible without crashing. You control a car moving upward across roads that shift between highways, b-roads, and dirt tracks. Speed, braking, and lane changes let you dodge other vehicles and obstacles like potholes, avalanches, and crossroads. A speedometer, fuel gauge, and battery meter track your progress while a spare tire indicator shows when repairs are needed. Hitting obstacles causes random steering, slowdowns, or damage that forces you to stop and change tires. Manage your speed to keep battery power up while avoiding the edges of the screen and losing one of five lives. The game’s simplicity hides layers of tension as obstacles grow more chaotic over time. Logs damage radiators, broken glass forces pit stops, and road patches sap momentum. Gas stations offer brief respites to refuel and restore systems but appear infrequently. With no multiplayer modes and a focus on survival, Motor Mania tests reflexes and resource management in equal measure. Its 1982 release date means the visuals feel basic by modern standards but the core loop of dodging, repairing, and pushing forward remains refreshingly direct.
