Mr. Goemon is a classic side-scrolling platformer from 1986 where you maneuver the titular character through dense, action-packed levels. Enemies swarm in to grab you, forcing rapid stick adjustments to wriggle free. Later rounds add projectile threats, demanding both dodging and quick counterattacks. You can smash foes with a carried pipe or toss nearby objects to whack them. Kicking enemies off the screen or down layers helps clear paths, with each stage culminating in a boss clash or a treasure hoard of score-boosting gold bars. Originally an arcade cabinet staple, it’s now playable on PC and modern consoles including PlayStation 4. The game’s tight controls and physicality, emphasizing stick flicks and timing, stand out compared to later platformers. Though its visuals feel dated, the pure reflex-testing gameplay earned it a cult following. With over 35 years since release, it remains a sharp example of Konami’s 80s arcade design.
