Mushihimesama is a fast-paced arcade shooter from CAVE that drops you into a forest teeming with giant insect enemies. You control Reco, a princess riding a beetle, as she battles swarms of beetles, spiders, and other bugs through tight corridors and open areas. The game blends rapid bullet-dodging with power-ups that let you switch between different weapons and armor. Single-player runs are straightforward but challenging, while competitive multiplayer modes add replay value. Available on iOS, PS2, and arcade cabinets since 2004, it retains the twitchy reflexes required for its original cabinet release. The game’s charm lies in its chaotic action and quirky art style. Enemy designs are detailed and varied, with each insect type having distinct attack patterns. Player reviews on forums often highlight its addictive difficulty curve and the satisfaction of mastering its weapon upgrades. With a 8.5/10 average on arcade-focused sites, it’s a cult favorite among shooter fans. A sequel and spin-off titles exist but the original remains the most revered for its tight controls and relentless pace.
Huge insect-like creatures called Koju roam the forest outside the village of Hoshifuri. When Reco's people fall to a mysterious sickness, the young princess decides to leave the village and meet the God of the Koju, who may provide a cure. Riding her faithful Golden Beetle friend Kiniro, Reco must traverse the wilds, braving the hostile landscape and the aggressive Koju beasts on her journey through the Shinju Forest.
