Musya is a side-scrolling action platformer from 1992 that tasks you with guiding a determined warrior through dark treacherous caves. You play as Imoto a lone fighter who must rescue a captured maiden named Shizuka. The game blends precise platforming with combat requiring you to navigate tight jumps and defeat enemies in real time. Each level is a mix of exploration and challenge with a focus on timing and strategy to survive the dangers ahead. Developed by Jorudan and released on the Super Nintendo Musya remains a cult classic among retro gaming circles. Its challenging difficulty and atmospheric visuals set it apart though it’s often overlooked due to its limited exposure outside Japan. With its blend of horror themes and traditional platforming it’s a title that appeals to players looking for a tougher more old-school experience. The game’s quirky translation choices like the unconventional romanization of its title add to its unique charm for language enthusiasts.
Musya follows a pikeman (described as a spearman in the Japanese version and a pikeman in the English version) named Imoto (Jinrai (神雷) in the Japanese version), who must descend to the abyss to save Shizuka, a maiden. After Imoto survives a battle in which all other combatants perish, he travels to Tengumura Village, where he collapses. The mayor, Akagi (who is not named in the Japanese version), greets Imoto and tells him that Shizuka (しずか) needs to be rescued. Imoto heads into Tengumura Cavern (known in the Japanese version as Kihōshōnyūdō (鬼宝鍾乳洞)).
