My Mario Game is a chaotic, surreal indie platformer that channels the DIY spirit of early 2000s fan games. You navigate glitchy, unpredictable levels filled with pixel art and bizarre obstacles. The gameplay leans into its handmade feel with abrupt shifts in tone and design that feel less polished and more purposefully rough around the edges. It's not about precision jumps or clever puzzles but about experiencing the strange, unfiltered energy of an amateur project that somehow coheres into a playable experience. The game is a direct nod to forgotten forum posts and the raw ambition of young developers. Inspired by a fictional 14-year-old’s first attempt, it captures the earnest, awkward charm of early Game Maker projects. Its appeal lies in the humor of its own imperfections and the way it turns nostalgia into a self-aware joke. Small but memorable, it’s a quick trip down memory lane for anyone who’s ever tried making a game in their bedroom.
Something I like to do when I have free time is look for old games on internet forums. It's interesting to me to see what amateur games made in Game Maker were like in the early 2000s, and occasionally I come across things so ridiculous that they're funny. One night, when I was searching for games on abandoned forums, I had come across a post posted by a user called “EpicScottGames”. The article had the title “My Mario Game”, the only thing it had was an executable file with the same name and a description that said the following: “Hi guys, this is my first video game. My name is Scott, and I am 14 years old. I really like Super Mario games and I have a dream to work at Nintendo, so I wanted to start making games. This is my first game and it's called "Super Mario Adventure" I have tried the game and I can say that it is worth taking a look, for an amateur game it is quite good. I hope to contact Scott at some point.
