Need for Speed World is a free-to-play racing MMO that let players build and customize cars while competing in events against others online. Launched in 2010 it focused on multiplayer progression with a mix of races heists and upgrades. Players could earn in-game currency to tweak vehicles or purchase real-world items to boost their standing. The game leaned heavily on social features letting you team up for missions or challenge friends directly. Despite its ambitious scope the game closed permanently in 2015 after five years of operation. Reviews at launch praised the variety of customization but noted uneven server performance and a pay-to-win model that frustrated some. With no active servers left it remains a relic of early 2010s online racing experiments. The July 2010 release date marked EA’s push into free-to-play but also highlighted the challenges of sustaining long-term multiplayer communities without constant support.
