Nehan: Kanzenban is a PC-only RPG that swaps traditional combat for tense, narrative-driven survival horror. You play as someone trapped in a decaying building filled with grotesque mutations and existential dread. Instead of grinding enemies, you avoid or trigger event-based battles while scavenging for clues and scarce resources. The environment itself feels hostile, shifts in architecture, warped logic, and disturbing discoveries fuel the sense of being trapped in a nightmare. Exploration is slow and methodical, with every corpse and object hinting at a larger cosmic menace. The game’s DIY polish stands out. Built in RPG Maker, it uses simple mechanics to amplify psychological unease, stuttering dialogue, abrupt camera angles, and a palette of sickly greens and grays. Developer DarkWorldSoft leans hard into body horror tropes, with enemies that defy anatomy and death animations that linger longer than they should. Released in 2002 but still niche, it’s a relic of early 2000s indie horror that prioritizes atmosphere over budget. Fans of games like Phasmophobia or horror fiction by Junji Ito might find its relentless weirdness compelling, though its clunky presentation won’t suit everyone.
The protagonist, "I", was kidnapped by a mysterious group while buying cigarettes and locked in a room. "Where am I...?" The room was filthy, with only a large hole with no bottom visible. "Let's get out of here quickly..." "I" left the room, but the building was abnormal. One after another, corpses were found with their belongings removed, non-human objects attacked "I", and a horrifying scene that seemed not to be of this world. "I" tried to escape from there, discovering the few remaining surviving friends.
