You play as Kunio, a tough high schooler seeking revenge against Yūji Munakata for beating his friend and bullying his school. The game blends side-scrolling brawling with adventure elements, letting you punch through enemies and solve minor puzzles to progress. Riki, a rival-turned-ally, joins as a co-op partner if another player owns a copy and a Game Link Cable. Both characters fight identically, but Riki’s fixed to the second player slot. The Game Boy’s limitations keep the action tight and focused, with simple but punchy combat and a straightforward story. This 1990 title is one of the earliest Kunio-kun entries to feature co-op, setting a template for later games in the series. While it shares graphics with Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, it lacks that game’s character swaps, locking you to Kunio alone in single-player. The linear design and lack of complexity make it a quick, punchy pick-up-and-play option for fans of old-school beat ’em ups.
Players assume the role of Kunio, who must avenge the beating of his friend Hiroshi at the hands of Yūji Munakata, the only son of the chairman of Munakata Industries. Yūji has also been terrorizing Hanazono High School, so Riki joins Kunio as well, provided that another player has another copy of the game and the Game Link Cable. Though the game was released after Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari and uses similar graphics, they game doesn't give the player an option to choose between Kunio or Riki (the first player always controls Kunio and he is the only playable character in a single player game, only the second player can use Riki, though both characters play the same).
