Neural Gear is a fast-paced scrolling shooter where you pilot a time-traveling combat suit to dismantle rogue robots across historical eras. You control Emi T. Fonon, who zips through levels set in progressively older time periods, each packed with tougher enemies and chaotic enemy waves. The mouse-driven action sees you left-clicking to blast yellow energy balls and right-clicking to deploy one of four level-selectable sub weapons. Options range from blue energy blasts to homing missiles, with the ??? sub weapon serving as a wild card, it obliterates everything on screen but risks blowing you up too. The game’s health management stands out. A top-screen timer doubles as your health bar, eroding when you take damage. Sustain too much and it hits zero, but clearing enemies or landing 20 kills can replenish it. Completing levels also adds points, creating a tense balance between damage and resource management. Players often highlight the ??? weapon’s chaotic potential and the escalating difficulty as standout mechanics. Its 1990 Sharp X68000 release solidified its cult status among retro arcade fans.
